St. Ignatius of Antioch was a prominent first-century bishop, theologian, and Christian martyr who served as the third bishop of Antioch. While being transported under military guard to Rome to face execution during the reign of Emperor Trajan, he authored seven highly influential letters to early Christian communities. These epistles are vital historical documents that strongly defended Christ’s divinity, established the structural importance of bishops in church hierarchy, and popularized the phrase “Catholic Church.” Ignatius famously embraced his impending martyrdom, viewing his death in the Roman Colosseum as the ultimate imitation of Christ and a testament to his faith.
