Life and Faith
The Roman Catholic faith is a global, ancient Christian tradition centered on Jesus Christ, organized under the authority of the Pope in Rome. It is built on structured beliefs and lived out through daily prayer, community worship, and moral action.
Core Beliefs (The Creed)
- The Trinity: Belief in one God in three divine persons: Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit.
- Incarnation and Resurrection: Belief that Jesus is God’s Son, who became human, died for humanity’s sins, and rose from the dead.
- The Church and Authority: Belief that Jesus founded the Church, passing authority to Saint Peter (the first Pope) and the bishops (Apostolic Succession).
- Scripture and Tradition: Faith is guided by both the Holy Bible and Sacred Tradition (the ongoing teachings of the Church).
- The Afterlife: Belief in heaven, purgatory (a state of purification), and hell, based on God’s judgment.
How the Faith is Lived Out
1. The Sacraments (Sacred Rituals)
Catholics participate in seven sacraments, which are seen as visible signs of God’s invisible grace. The most central are:
- The Eucharist (Mass): The core weekend service where Catholics believe bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ.
- Confession (Reconciliation): Confessing sins to a priest to receive God’s forgiveness and spiritual healing.
- Initiation: Receiving Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion to fully enter the Church community.
2. Daily and Personal Prayer
- Mass Attendance: Gathering as a community every Sunday (or Saturday evening) and on Holy Days of Obligation.
- The Rosary: A traditional scripture-based prayer meditating on the lives of Jesus and Mary.
- Saints and Mary: Catholics do not worship Mary or the saints, but they ask them to pray to God on their behalf (intercession).
3. Moral and Social Living
- The Ten Commandments: Following God’s moral laws as the foundation for daily behavior and choices.
- Catholic Social Teaching: Actively caring for the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable, viewing every human life as sacred.
- Pro-Life Ethics: Defending human dignity from conception to natural death.
- Charity: Engaging in global and local community service through Catholic lay organizations.
