Confession – HOW TO

Confession – Different Names for the Sacrament

The Church uses several names for this sacrament, and each one describes a part of the experience:

  • Sacrament of Penance: Shows the step of turning away from sin and choosing to do better.
  • Sacrament of Reconciliation: Shows how your relationship with God and the church community is healed and mended.
  • Sacrament of Confession: Highlights that you speak your sins out loud to a priest.
  • Sacrament of Forgiveness: Points to God granting pardon through the priest’s ministry.
  • Sacrament of Conversion: Means turning your life back toward God and away from wrong choices.

Tips to Prepare for Confession

  • Do an Examination of Conscience: Think quietly about your recent thoughts, words, and actions using the Ten Commandments or other passages from Scripture to see where you fell short.
  • Pray for Help: Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a clear memory, true honesty, and a sincere heart.
  • Be Honest: Do not hide sins on purpose. Keep your words clear and simple.
  • Do Not Be Afraid: Remember that the priest hears your sins as a helper of God, not as a judge. Every sin shared is kept in strict, absolute secrecy.

How to Go to Confession

Follow these steps when you meet with the priest:

  1. Greeting: The priest welcomes you. You make the Sign of the Cross and say, “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been [number] weeks or months or years since my last confession.”
  2. Confess Your Sins: Tell the priest your sins honestly. Name the wrong things you did and about how many times you did them.
  3. Receive Penance: The priest gives you spiritual advice and assigns a penance (a prayer or small action to help repair the harm of sin).
  4. Act of Contrition: Pray an Act of Contrition (a short prayer telling God you are sorry for hurting Him).
  5. Absolution: The priest raises his hand and gives you absolution (God’s forgiveness of your sins through the priest).
  6. Departure: The priest says, “Go in peace.” You reply, “Thanks be to God,” and then go finish your penance prayer.

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.

Forgiven

Absolution is the formal act by which a priest, acting in the person of Christ, forgives your sins during the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). It is the definitive moment when God’s mercy is poured out, cleansing you and restoring your relationship with God and the Church.  Absolution helps you live your faith more fully by providing spiritual healing, God’s grace, and psychological relief.
