The Sacrament of Matrimony
The Sacrament of Matrimony is a holy covenant before God that unites a man and a woman in an unbreakable, lifelong partnership. In the Roman Catholic Church, marriage is not merely a legal contract or a social ceremony. It is a profound, visible sign of God’s invisible grace, instituted by Christ to sanctify human love and strengthen couples on their shared journey toward heaven.

Theological Foundations
The foundations of Matrimony are deeply rooted in Sacred Scripture and Catholic Tradition, tracing back to the very creation of humanity.
- Created in God’s Image: Sacred Scripture teaches that God created humanity in His own image as male and female. This complementary design reflects the relational nature of God, who is Himself a communion of Love—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- A Covenantal Bond: Unlike a standard contract, which is an exchange of goods or services, a covenant is an exchange of persons. It mirrors the permanent, faithful, and sacrificial covenant that God establishes with His people throughout salvation history.
- Elevated by Christ: Jesus Christ elevated marriage to the dignity of a Sacrament during His earthly ministry. By performing His first public miracle at the Wedding at Cana, Christ signaled the sacred importance of marriage and promised His divine assistance to all who enter into it.
CCC 1601 “The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.”
The Purposes of Marriage
The Church teaches that the Sacrament of Matrimony is naturally directed toward two interconnected purposes, which cannot be separated.
- The Unitive Purpose: Marriage serves the mutual good, growth, and sanctification of the spouses. Through the total gift of self, a husband and wife help each other grow in holiness, virtue, and selfless love, finding companionship and strength in their shared life.
- The Procreative Purpose: Marriage is inherently open to the transmission of human life. Spouses cooperate with God’s creative power to welcome, nurture, and form children in the faith, establishing a “Domestic Church”—the family home where the Gospel is lived and taught daily.
Reflecting the Love of Christ
Matrimony serves as a living, breathing icon of Christ’s presence in the world. St. Paul describes this mystery in his Letter to the Ephesians, comparing the relationship between husband and wife to the relationship between Christ and the Church.
- Total and Faithful: Just as Christ promised to remain with the Church until the end of time, spouses promise absolute fidelity to one another through all of life’s trials and joys.
- Sacrificial and Unconditional: Christ poured out His life on the Cross out of love for humanity. In marriage, spouses are called to exercise this same heroic, self-sacrificing love, putting the needs of the other before their own.
- A Witness to the World: By living out their vows with joy, patience, and forgiveness, Catholic couples provide a powerful witness to a world that often struggles with division. A holy marriage shows the world that enduring, unconditional love is possible through the grace of God.
