Carmelites

The Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) is the first indigenous religious congregation for men in the Catholic Church of India. Founded in 1831 in Kerala, India, the congregation belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic Church in full communion with the Pope. Driven by the charism of its founders, most notably Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the CMI congregation serves the global Church through education, pastoral ministry, social work, and spiritual renewal.

Our Heritage and Origins

The CMI congregation was born out of a desire for spiritual renewal and communal life within the Thomas Christian community of Kerala. On July 8, 1831, three holy priests—Fr. Thomas Palackal, Fr. Thomas Porukara, and Fr. Kuriakose Elias Chavara—laid the foundation for the first monastery at Mannanam.

They sought to blend the deep contemplation of the Carmelite tradition with active apostolic service to meet the urgent needs of the local Church and society.

Our Co-Founder: Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara

The guiding light of the CMI congregation, Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1805–1871), was a visionary leader, social reformer, and mystic. Canonized by Pope Francis in 2014, Saint Chavara revolutionized society through his pioneering work in education and printing.

He famously mandated that every church under his jurisdiction establish a school, making education accessible to all people, regardless of caste or social standing. Today, his spirit of compassionate service continues to drive our global mission.

Core Pillars of Our Charism

  • Contemplative Prayer: Rooted in the Carmelite tradition, our life flows from an intimate relationship with God, nourished by the Holy Eucharist and a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
  • Fraternal Life: We live, pray, and work together in community, reflecting the unity and love of Christ.
  • Apostolic Action: Our contemplation bears fruit in our active service to God’s people, always responding to the “signs of the times.”

Fields of Mission and Ministry

From a humble single monastery in India, the CMI congregation has grown into a global missionary force, serving across multiple continents.

  1. Education

We believe that education is vital for human liberation and societal transformation. The CMI congregation manages a vast network of prestigious educational institutions worldwide, including universities, engineering colleges, medical schools, and primary and secondary schools.

  1. Pastoral and Missionary Care

Our priests serve in parishes, retreat centers, and mission dioceses across the globe. We preach the Gospel, administer the sacraments, and foster vibrant parish communities rooted in faith.

  1. Social Apostolate

Following the footsteps of Saint Chavara, we run orphanages, homes for the destitute, hospitals, and rural development centers to uplift the poor, the marginalized, and the suffering.

  1. Communication and Media

We utilize modern media, publishing houses, and digital platforms to spread the message of Christ, promote cultural values, and foster moral awareness.
