St. Joseph at Fleming

St. Joseph’s at Fleming is a not-for-profit, 200-bed long-term care facility located at 659 Brealey Drive in Peterborough, Ontario. Known for being the first long-term care facility built directly on the campus of a post-secondary learning institution, Fleming College, it operates as a faith-based, charitable home managed by Saint Elizabeth Health Care.

The History

The facility officially opened its doors in September 2005. Its roots trace back to the collaborative efforts of the St. Joseph’s Care Foundation, the Friends of Fleming Foundation, Marycrest Home for the Aged, Anson House, and Sir Sandford Fleming College. Together, these groups launched a capital campaign that successfully raised $4.5 million to build a state-of-the-art home.

By partnering directly with Fleming College, the home established the Institute for Healthy Aging, creating a unique, pioneering model that bridges senior long-term care with educational opportunities and hands-on learning for students.

The Mission

Inspired and guided by the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peterborough, the home operates under a Catholic, faith-based foundation. Its core mission is to provide compassionate, person-centred long-term care that ensures the ultimate comfort, love, and respect for every individual.

While rooted in Catholic values, the home holds a strict dedication to welcoming and serving persons of all faiths, traditions, and cultures. Its motto emphasizes “influencing lives through learning, research, and innovation”.

Life at the Home

Life at St. Joseph’s at Fleming is structured around a “family of homes” design to maintain an environment of personal worth, dignity, and true companionship.

  • Living Arrangements: The 200-bed facility is organized into eight distinct living areas. To feel more like a neighborhood, each individual area features its own dedicated dining room, living room, activity space, and access to gardens. Accommodation options include private, semi-private, and basic rooms.
  • Care & Professional Services: Residents receive 24/7 nursing supervision and personal care. They also have direct access to dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dental care, and comprehensive medication management.
  • On-Site Amenities: The campus is heavily enriched with unique lifestyle amenities, including a greenhouse, sensory gardens, a library, a chapel, a beauty salon, a games room, and a business centre. Notably, the property even integrates an on-site child day care centre, fostering vibrant intergenerational interactions.
  • Activities & Programming: The home hosts a robust schedule of social, cultural, and recreational programming. This includes unique therapeutic offerings such as pet therapy and a highly emphasized multi-denominational, spiritually-based pastoral care program.
