Saint Marie-Marguerite d’Youville (1701–1771) was a French Canadian widow who became the first native-born Canadian to be elevated to sainthood by the Roman Catholic Church. After the death of her husband, she dedicated her life to helping the poor and founded the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, commonly known as the Grey Nuns. Under her leadership, the order broke traditional monastic boundaries by actively serving the community, managing hospitals, and providing shelter for the impoverished, orphaned, and neglected. Her legacy of radical compassion and systemic charity earned her the title “Mother of Universal Charity” from Pope John XXIII when she was beatified in 1959.
St. Marie-Marguerite D’Youville, faithful servant of the poor and mother of charity, you faced every hardship with unshakable trust in God.
Please intercede for me today.
- Give me a heart open to the needs of the suffering and the lonely.
- Grant me the courage to serve others with patience and joy.
- Help me to trust God’s providence in my own darkest moments.
Pray that I may always see the face of Jesus in my neighbors. Amen.
