Papal Blessing Requests

A Papal Blessing, or Apostolic Blessing, is a parchment certificate blessed by the Holy Father. These blessings are granted on the occasion of specific major life milestones and sacraments for practicing Catholics. The Office of Spiritual Affairs for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Peterborough is pleased to assist parishioners in navigating the application process through the Vatican’s Office of Papal Charities.

Occasions for Which a Papal Blessing is Granted

The Vatican strictly regulates the occasions for which an Apostolic Blessing can be issued. The blessing can only be requested for the following milestones:

  • Sacraments: Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and Holy Matrimony.
  • Anniversaries: Significant Wedding Anniversaries (25th, 50th, 60th, etc.).
  • Ordination/Religious Profession: Diaconate Ordination, Priesthood Ordination, and significant anniversaries of ordination or religious vows (25th, 50th, 60th, etc.).
  • Birthdays: Significant milestones (e.g., 80th, 90th, 100th).
  • Individual Faithful or Families: General blessings for a practicing Catholic or a single family unit (provided a priest verifies their active faith standing).

Note: Papal Blessings cannot be granted posthumously, for deceased individuals, or for occasions not listed above (such as the blessing of a house, a business, an animal, or a regular birthday/anniversary).

Requirements for Application

To receive a Papal Blessing, the recipient(s) must be practicing members of the Roman Catholic Church.

Every application requires a Priest’s Recommendation. Your local parish priest must sign the application form or provide a letter on parish letterhead certifying that the applicant is a practicing Catholic in good standing. This step is mandatory before the diocese or the Vatican can process the request.

How to Apply

Parishioners have two main pathways to apply for a Papal Blessing:

Option 1: Directly Through the Vatican Online Portal (Recommended)

The fastest and most direct way to request a blessing is through the official website of the Dicastery for the Charity Services.

  1. Visit the official website for Papal Blessings through the link below: REQUEST A PAPAL BLESSING.
  2. Select the desired occasion and choose a parchment design from the online gallery.
  3. Fill out the digital form with the exact names, dates, and parish details.
  4. Upload the required digital copy of the priest’s recommendation letter.
  5. Submit the offering via credit card (which covers the cost of the parchment and international DHL shipping).

Option 2: Through the Office of Spiritual Affairs (Allow at least 4 months)

If you require assistance or cannot use the online portal, you can submit your request through the Office of Spiritual Affairs at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Peterborough:

  1. Download and print the Papal Blessing Request Form.
  2. Present the form to your parish priest to obtain his signature and parish seal.
  3. Submit the completed form, along with the specified fee (covering the parchment and postage costs), to the Office of Spiritual Affairs.
  4. The Chancellor or Vice Chancellor will review your application and forward it to the Vatican on your behalf.

Offering

The offering includes the following:

– the parchments (ranging from 21 to 30 Euros according to the template chosen)
– mailing by DHL Express Courier starting from 15 Euros (prices calculated on quantity and destination).

N.B.    Regarding the offering, it is important to emphasize that, after subtracting the costs of preparing and posting the parchment, all proceeds are applied entirely to the works of charity undertaken daily in the name of the Pope by this Office, in service of the poor.

Timelines for Special Events and Milestones

Because all authentic certificates are printed, individually inscribed, and shipped directly from Rome, you must allow ample time for processing.

  • Online Applications: Allow at least 6 to 8 weeks before the date of the celebration or milestone.
  • Diocesan Paper Applications: Allow at least 3 to 4 months before the date of the celebration to account for local processing, international mailing, and Vatican production timelines.

If you are requesting a blessing for a wedding or a major anniversary, we highly recommend submitting your application as early as possible. If the blessing is for an upcoming event, the parchment can be sent to your local parish so your pastor can present it on the day of the celebration.
